Play-Based STEM: Why Hands-On Blocks Outperform Electronic Toys for Early Speech

Walk down the toy aisle of any major retailer and you will see dozens of brightly flashing, talking plastic gadgets labeled “educational.” They sing the alphabet, flash LED lights when buttons are pressed, and promise early reading readiness.
Yet developmental pediatric studies consistently show the opposite: battery-powered electronic toys reduce the quality and quantity of language exchanged between children and caregivers.
The Problem with “Talking” Toys
When an electronic toy talks, sings, or provides automatic auditory feedback, it takes over the conversational space. Studies published in JAMA Pediatrics observed that during play with electronic toys, parents spoke significantly fewer words, responded less frequently to child vocalizations, and used fewer content-specific words than when playing with traditional toys.
In short: the toy does the talking, so the child and adult stop communicating.
The Power of Open-Ended Materials
Traditional, open-ended materials—natural wood blocks, water troughs, magnifying glasses, scoops, and cardboard cylinders—contain no batteries and make no sound on their own.
For a child to engage with them, the child must generate the action, and the educator must provide the language:
- “Look how high that cylinder balances before it wobbles.”
- “What happens if we place the wide block on the bottom?”
- “Can you slide the small pinecone down the ramp?”
