The Vestibular and Proprioceptive Systems
Young children develop self-regulation through their vestibular system (balance and spatial orientation) and proprioceptive system (body awareness through physical resistance). When a child jumps, balances along a bench, climbs an incline, or pushes a weighted cart, their muscles and joints send calming sensory feedback directly to the central nervous system.
Suppressing this physical drive leads to sensory restlessness and executive function fatigue.
